Adobe Photoshop CS3 Tools palette with keyboard shortcuts

The Tools palette layout contains 60 separate tools. Double-clicking any tool will automatically display the Tool options palette and from there you can select individual options for that tool.

To select a tool to work on your image you simply click on it in the Tools palette. If you leave your mouse cursor over the tool Adobe Photoshop CS3 will indicate the name of the tool and the keyboard shortcut to access the tool.

Some of the tools are stacked in groups of tools. A small black arrow in the bottom right corner of the tool indicates additional tools are stacked behind. To access any of the tools in this stack click and hold down the mouse button on the uppermost tool for a second.

You can use associated keyboard shortcut to quickly select a tool without having to always use the Tools palette to select the tool you wish to use. For example, pressing B on the keyboard will activate the Brush Tool in the Tools palette. Where more than one tool shares the same keyboard shortcut, you can cycle through these other tools by holding down the Shift key as you press the keyboard shortcut. If you prefer to restore the old behavior whereby repeated pressing of the key would cycle the tool selection, go to the Adobe Photoshop CS3 menu, select Preferences > General and deselect the Use Shift Key for Tool Switch option. You can also Alt-click the tool icon in the Tools palette to cycle through the grouped tools.
