Shading using multiply.

[Click on the Images to zoom] [back]

Step 1. On your colour layer, using the mask wand tool select the area around your colour . As shown. Make sure all transparent areas on your colour layer are selected then right click and press 'select inverse'
Step 2. Keeping your selection selected, Make a new layer and make sure you have that layer selected. Then using the fill bucket and pure white colour, click in your selected area, the area will be filled with colour.
Step 3. Both the wolves in my subject are brown, theirfore i am using a dark brown for my shading. Start to cell shade as you normally would on any picture. Make sure that you do not shade where the light source is hitting the area, as you can see the light is coming from the left, so i will not shade anything on the left side. This is crucial in digital art for getting the right lighting in an image.
Step 4. When you have completed your shading or you want to see how it is progressing, go to your layers palette and click the drop down menu which by default is on "normal" and change it to muliply.

Step 5. Now all the white area will dissapear and the brown will come darker, yet slightly transparent. Using the layer palette again, you can change the fill slider to lower or highen the strength of the brown. like so

Of course, if you only want to have the "cell shading" look you can stop here, however if you want a softer type of shading please read on below!

Step 6. Turn your layer back to "normal" on the layers palette if you havn't already, then using the Lasso Mask tool draw around an area as shown in this image. Only select a small part of your image to get full effect. Use the shading as a guideline. Note that this does take some practice to perfect it.
Step 7. Next, select the gradient shading tool (found if you press down on the full bucket button in your toolbox for a moment) and make sure the opacity isnt too high (see image). Make sure you are using exsactly the same shade of brown you used for the other shading!
Step 8. Gently gradient shade the selected area until you have it as dark as you desire.

Step 9 . when you have done, change the layer back to "multiply" to see the effects! and thats it!

Have fun! I hope my tutorial has helped!.
